Shimmer Polish

I adore Shimmer Polish. You can read all about how pretty and glittery and delicate they are all over my blog, but today I bring you a beautiful siren named Marilyn. I have been eying this stunner since I saw it on Shimmer Polish’s Facebook page. It is so beautiful and deep, described as a “dark burgundy glitter” and as being a darker version of Eva & Karina.

A vampy blood red jelly base surrounds a ton of tiny deep red glitter, creating an opaque glitter bomb. This polish is so dense that it took only two coats to reach nice opacity!

I wore 2 coats of Marilyn with a coat of Gelous and another coat of top coat to smooth it out and give it a glass-like finish. Look at this beauty!

Shimmer_Marilyn

Is that not perfection?

Shimmer_Marilyn2

This polish is aptly named after the screen legend because I kept thinking “Marilyn” when I wore it. It screams sex goddess!

What do you think of this beauty?

Can you believe 2012 is almost over? This year was a big one for me… I started my new job, recently moved to our new home, started blogging and taking my polish and beauty obsession to a whole new level, and along with that, I met some amazing people in this community.

It’s been a little quiet on my blog lately, mainly due to my big move just before Christmas… I thought I would catch up, not only on a blog post or two, but also share some of my top polishes of the year (with links to the original posts).

Hope this is a fun read for you!

In no particular order, here is Aphrodite Lacquers’ It’s My Party topped with The Icing on the Cake. I immediately fell in love with this hot pink jelly (and its glittery topper), and can’t wait to wear this with a little tan!

Aphrodite_IcingOnTheCake

My most popular post, even garnering a shout-out from Suzi Weiss-Fishman, OPI’s Creative Director, on her twitter chat recently (!!), was the Monet jelly sandwich. This was created using OPI’s Funny Bunny with Shimmer Polish Linna, and it turned into one of my favourite manicures.

Shimmer_Linna_jelly_OPI_FunnyBunny2

Oh Zoya Ornate Collection, how I love thee! After patiently waiting for this gorgeous collection to arrive, I created my very first striping tape mani using Zoya Storm and Aurora:

Zoya_Ornate_nailart-2

Another day, another gorgeous Shimmer Polish! Karina, a deep vampy red jelly, is beautiful and glamorous and oh-so-sparkly!

Shimmer_Karina

I loved the sparkle of this mani: a-England’s Dorian Grey topped with Shimmer Polish Vanessa. Look at that sparkle!

Shimmer_Vanessa

And so you can see why I love Dorian Gray, look at this steely pewter:

This year I also tried my very first Nubar polishes, and I fell in love. Look at shiny Nubar Espresso from the Simplicity Meets Elegance Collection:

Nubar_Espresso_Sun

From the same collection, here is Nubar Rouge, another gorgeous pink I fell in love with:

Nubar_Rouge_Sun

Up next, another of my most popular posts comes courtesy of OPI’s first foray into magnetics, from the OPI Skyfall Collection to commemorate 50 years of Bond films: OPI Magnetic Lacquer Is that Silva? I just love the holo magnetic!

OPI-Magnetic-IsThatSilva-

Blue is my favourite colour though I’ve often steered clear of it in my manicures. But Revlon Royal, especially combined with Aphrodite Lacquers’ Doorman, was something spectacular….

Aphrodite_Doorman

Who doesn’t love a sparkly linear holographic polish? The ladies at Glitter Gal have made holos their business, and let me tell you, Glitter Gal Wisteria does not disappoint!! I loved the subtlety of this light hue…

Glitter_Gal_Wisteria_Sun2

I am a fool for sparkles, and Aphrodite Lacquers Peacock Earrings was distracting. Here it is, layered over China Glaze’s Liquid Leather for optimum sparkle and shine:

Aphrodite_Peacock_Earrings

I think by now you know how much I adore jelly sandwiches. (And I should really do more of them!) Another Zoya collection that I was lusting after, Zoya Gloss, is a jelly-lover’s dream come true. Here is Zoya Frida layered with a relatively new indie, Kiss Your Elbow Polish’s A Drop in the Ocean:

Zoya-Frida Drop in Ocean Jelly
This list wouldn’t be complete without Picture Polish and their Mesh shade Tease, a glittery silvery-pink beauty that I received as part of their Blog Fest for 2012:

picturepolish_Tease_Shade

Next is a sparkly vampy black jelly courtesy of Aphrodite Lacquers, Nebula. Though I love vamps, I don’t always wear straight black polishes, unless, of course, they have a little something like Nebula does. Filled with aqua and silver glitters, Nebula has depth and sparkle:

Aphrodite_Nebula1

And last but not least, the one that started my love affair with Aphrodite Lacquers, Grapetini! I think it’s fair to say that AL is one of my favourite indies, having created a number of polishes that I wear again and again… and Grapetini, with its purple squishiness, was part of my very first AL order that was not meant to be. It has the unfortunate distinction of being my first polish to arrive smashed to pieces lol.

Aphrodite-Grapetini-3cts

And that, dear readers, is my first top… 16 list! It was meant to be a top-12 but there were simply too many that I adore. There are many more that I love and wanted to share, but in the spirit of keeping this a somewhat shortish blog post, not all the beauties could be included… Perhaps I will share another top-12 list soon.

Hope you enjoyed this post as much as I have enjoyed selecting my favourites. May the New Year bring you and your loved ones much joy and happiness, success and love.

Following yesterday’s post of my Monet-inspired OPI Funny Bunny and Shimmer Polish jelly sandwich, I thought it only appropriate to dedicate a quick post to the canvas of one of my favourite manicures…

Shimmer_Linna_jelly_OPI_FunnyBunnyIGInstagram feed

This delicate jelly sandwich (detailed here) was built upon my newest favourite white jelly polish, OPI’s Funny Bunny. Funny Bunny was released in 2007’s Garden Party collection for spring. I know, it does seem like a really old polish now that I type that out! However, it is perfection bottled. A perfect soft white, Funny Bunny is a clean white jelly leaning slightly warm rather than blue-based. It’s not warm enough to be yellow which I love! It’s like a crisp white linen shirt…

Unlike last year’s NY Ballet Collection, a collection of very sheer jellies which I wanted to love but didn’t due to the 3 – 4 coats needed to achieve any hint of colour or coverage, Funny Bunny only needs two nice coats for beautiful and even coverage. A white that self-levels? Sign me up!

Here it is, with only two coats and base/top coat:

OPI_FunnyBunny

I am in love.

How do you like Funny Bunny?

Today I have for you possibly my favourite jelly sandwich ever… resembling a Monet painting, a watercolour-like abstract on each nail.

Monet Le PrintempsMonet’s Le Printemps (Source)

While stocking up on some OPI polishes recently, I came across OPI’s Funny Bunny, an incredible soft-white jelly, a polish that I am perplexed about having missed all this time. If you are obsessed with white polishes like me, you know how hard they can be to apply. Funny Bunny is not like that – it is a dream! By the second coat, it is even, provides perfect coverage in that sheer, jelly way, and shines like crazy.

I knew I wanted to make a jelly sandwich when I applied Funny Bunny. For whatever reason, I chose a new Shimmer Polish I wanted to try, Linna, a gorgeous, turquoise-green glitter beauty. If you read any of my other Shimmer Polish reviews, you’ll know how amazing and glitter-packed Shimmers are. They are sparkly, provide coverage, and are sometimes made up of a dozen colours in one bottle! Linna is a pretty turquoise, leaning more green, but also contains red, blue and gold glitter.

After the 2 coats of Funny Bunny, I added two very thin coats of Shimmer Linna, then topped that off with a generous coat of Funny Bunny.

And the beautiful result (if I say so myself):

Shimmer_Linna_jelly_OPI_FunnyBunny

My version of a delicate Monet painting….

Shimmer_Linna_jelly_OPI_FunnyBunny3

And a macro to show you the beautiful depth and squishyness of this mani:

Shimmer_Linna_jelly_OPI_FunnyBunnyMacro

I should also mention that with this mani I finally attempted the glue peel-off-basecoat method, applying a coat of Elmer’s glue before the manicure as my base. After 24 hours, I had a big chip on my index finger, which immediately prompted me to start picking at the polish…

24 hours = not long enough for me.

Following Wacky Laki’s tutorial, I tried to “peel off” the polish using a cuticle stick, but unfortunately not all the polish was easy to peel off. On some fingernails, I was digging and pushing, trying to make an edge to peel off the polish.

Final verdict: was not worth the trouble for me… I think I’ll stick with 10 min of foil removal over 10 min of picking at my nails.

Shimmer Polish is available on Cindy’s Etsy shop. Don’t forget to follow her blog and her Facebook page as she holds lots of giveaways and shares news about the brand!

What do you think of this combination?

Do you love jelly sandwiches as much as me?

A perfect collection… I should say, kollection of kolors for the holiday season, the Kardashians have done it again! They have collaborated with Nicole by OPI once more for a very impressive selection of colours, previously mentioned in this press release.

First up is teal beauty Deck the Dolls, which I ended up using as a base for one of my Shimmer Polish manicures (see it here):

Nicole_KK_Deck_the_Dolls

A deep metallic teal, Deck the Dolls is a great holiday colour. The best part: no staining, even after nearly a week of wear!

And because I loved it so much, here is my Shimmer Polish Jennifer manicure again, using Deck the Dolls as a base:

Nicole_Shimmer_Jennifer

Then we have the glittery beauty of All is Glam, All is Bright, a mostly silver and red ultra-fine glitter mix with some rose and blue thrown in. This was a surprise favourite for me: the polish is fully opaque in 2 coats, and with a coat of top coat, leaves behind no gritty texture. And then it sparkles like crazy!! I was blown away by the coverage and quality of this polish. Love!!

Nicole_by_OPI_AllisGlam

And last but not least, Here We Kome A-Karoling, a deep blue-based purple with purple/red shimmers. (I previously used it as a base for another Shimmer Polish beauty, Karina, which you can see here.) This polish is a vampy beauty, perfectly up my alley, and a polish I will definitely wear again and again. On its first coat, it was sheer but by the second coat, provided good coverage. I think next time I will apply three thinner coats.

Nicole_KK_HereWeKome-A_Karoling

Don’t you love the hidden shimmers in this polish? Gorgeous!

Nicole by OPI’s six new limited-edition Kardashian Kolors were released last month, and should still be available for you to grab before the holiday season!

Which one was your favourite, and have you ever tried any of the Kardashian’s Nicole collaborations?

Today I have you for a whole slew of beauties from Shimmer Polish! Some of these you have seen before but I really wanted to do a weekend spam of Shimmer Polishes as I have some gorgeous combos for you.

First up, one of my very favourites from this batch, Karina. Karina is a beautiful deep red/burgundy jelly base packed with red/burgundy/black glitter. I have worn this colour alone a few times already (I told you, it is an absolute favourite!) but here it is at 2 coats layered over Nicole by OPI’s Here we Kome A-Karoling.

Another one I immediately fell in love with was Vanessa (previously reviewed here), a slightly grey jelly base with pewter, silver,  red and black glitter. This was an amazingly sparkly polish — simply spectacular!

Here it is layered over A-England’s Dorian Gray:

Check out the macro:

Now on to a brighter mani, Shimmer Polish Sophie in a gradient over stunning Nubar Rouge. I did this mani in support of one of our Go Pink Wednesday efforts, previously reviewed here.

Isn’t this simply gorgeous?

Then there is stunning Shimmer Polish Jennifer. Being a Scorpio, I am completely in love with water and the colours associated with it, though I try not to wear blue nail polish (well, I say that)… However, I can’t help but gravitate towards blues and turquoises!! When Cindy from Shimmer asked me what my favourite colour was, I hesitantly said blue… she assured me that Jennifer was light enough to allow wearability. Well… she was right. Check out gorgeous, sparkling Jennifer below over Nicole by OPI Kardashian Kollection’s Deck the Dolls (previously reviewed here):

Jennifer is in a clear base, packed full of multi-colour glitters in different sizes: it includes silver, blue, pink, turquoise and some black glitters.

Here I used it to accent the elegant Nubar Velvet Silver:

Here is Shimmer Polish Cassandra, an irridescent glitter mix in a clear shimmery base. I loved the simple sparkle of Cassandra  and tried it over several different undies.

Here is is over picture polish’s White Wedding, an amazing bright white jelly with tiny holographic sparkles created by Leah Ann Larowe:

Isn’t that gorgeous?

And here is Cassandra over a darker base, A England’s Dorian Gray (yes, I am in love with Dorian Gray 🙂 ) :

And last but not least, Shimmer Polish Carmen, a gold and copper glitter mix in a shimmery holographic base. Carmen builds to opacity very quickly so I did not need a base for this, but I did have some trouble capturing the perfect photo:

I am totally loving every single one the polishes pictured here. I can’t wait to mix them up with new base colours (like wearing Cassandra over a black base)!

Which one is your favourite? And do you have any Shimmer Polishes?

Shimmer Polish is available on Cindy’s Etsy shop. Don’t forget to follow her blog and her Facebook page for lots of giveaways and news about the brand!

In keeping with the rather grey and dreary weather fueled by Hurricane Sandy today, I thought I would bring you gorgeous greys:  one of my favourite Shimmer Polishes with my very favourite a-England Gothic Beauty!

a-England, a bijoux brand that I simply adore, recently released a dark collection named Gothic Beauties. I adore vamps and had to have all five polishes the moment Adina released them!!

And today I bring you my first review of this collection, featuring the gorgeous Dorian Gray. All of the Gothic Beauties have the beautiful black a-England Camelot as a base, and Dorian Gray is as dark of a gunmetal grey as you can get, even shining in a pearly black in some lights.  This beautiful metallic gunmetal is described as “an intensely sinister pewter grey, forged with a forgiving deep golden shimmer.” And how sinister it is! The deep golden shimmer is very subtle, allowing Dorian to reflect in more of a metallic sheen.
Like many of my a-Englands, Dorian Gray was a one-coater — thick and self-levelling, and really not needing a second coat (though I did apply one). The best part? It’s a smooth, liquid thicker polish, drying quickly and evenly, showing nary a brush stroke.

Here it is, two coats over a coat of The Knight basecoat, topped with a coat of The Shield top coat:

Indoor light

I love how dark and truly sinister it looks with flash:

With flash

Do you see that golden, blueish shimmer?

As if Dorian Gray wasn’t spectacular enough on its own, I added this incredible Shimmer Polish that I adored the moment it arrived: Shimmer Vanessa, a slightly darkened jelly base featuring pewter, silver and red glitters, with some black thrown in for good measure. You would think such a dark polish may be subdued, but not Vanessa. It was sparkling in the dimmest light!!! It was simply spectacular!

Here is one coat over my previous Dorian Gray mani:

Full sun

It was insanely sparkly!!! People stopped me to compliment this manicure!

Here is a macro for you to drool over 🙂

Tell me that is not a swoon-worthy polish!

I love how elegant this mani turned out. It was sparkly and party-ready, but not in-your-face. I wore this mani to a concert at a classic concert hall, with a gorgeous black dress… it was perfection!

You can purchase a-England’s Gothic Beauties (along with all their other beauties) directly on their website, from Nail Polish Canada, or from their US stockist Llarowe.

Week 4…. already!! Only 1 more week left in our joint Go Pink effort to in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month.  A whole slew of bloggers are sharing our pink manis every Wednesday throughout October… which is quickly nearing an end.

Today I wanted to bring you another fun mani!

Let’s start with this gorgeous, shiny and summery colour, which has totally won over my heart. Nubar’s Rouge, a hot pink creme polish, was a big surprise for me in a fall collection (read about it here!), but it has become a big favourite of mine. Hot pink to brighten up a dreary fall day? YES please!!

Isn’t it amazing?? Look at that bright and happy pink goodness! (Ok now I have just convinced myself I need to change polish. Again. To that beauty. And it’s late. LOL)

Now wait till you see how incredible Rouge looks as a base for this stunning gradient. Shimmer Sophie over Rouge!!

I so did not want to take that off!!! It is So incredibly beautiful!!! Even more so in real life!

Together we can make a difference!

Are you liking the pink manis so far? 🙂

Today I have for you a few beauties from nubar’s latest collection, Simplicity Meets Elegance. This is a fall collection that is a gorgeous mix of brights and muted colours, a little unusual for fall, in an amazing way.

Nubar’s description of this collection: This season nubar brings you eight new, high-fashion colors with the “Simplicity meets Elegance” Collection. Classic shades of Royal Blue, Terra-Cotta, Espresso, and Velvet Silver add a simple, sophisticated flare to any wardrobe basics. Luxurious colors like Romance, Rouge, Mystique, and Chartreuse add an elegant touch. And elegant and classic they are.

This was my first nubar experience, and I was impressed. All three of the colours I tried had an almost jelly-like quality, leaning a little sheer but building to perfect coverage on 2 or 3 coats (depending on how thick or thin your coats are). The best part? Shine, shine, shine!!!!

The first of the three colours I have is Espresso, a very dark, muted, almost greyish brown. Perfection for fall, it almost is the exact same colour as espresso. It was hard to see this colour in the bottle shots, but in person, and on the nail, it is incredible and rich.

I used 2 generous coats of polish over a base coat, with no top coat so you could see the incredible shine. On its first coat, this polish was extremely sheer, almost jelly-like. However, it dried very quickly, and I topped that off with a generous second coat, which provided full coverage. One nice thing about all three of these nubar polishes was how they self-leveled on the second coat.

Isn’t it gorgeous?

In the shade photo below, you can really see its jelly quality:

Up next, the other colour I had been eyeing, a beautiful medium-toned grey, Velvet Silver. This was more of a creme than Espresso, but still very sheer on its first coat. I could have gone for a third coat, but with my two generous coats, it provided beautiful and full coverage. Isn’t it a stunning grey, perfect for fall and winter?

And finally, a huge surprise for a fall collection, Rouge, a gorgeous, hot pink creme. Out of the three colours, this was the least sheer, and applied quite nicely on its first coat. I LOVE that nubar threw in a bright pink for fall – how unconventional and exciting! And for those of us who love our greys and browns and blacks in our fall wardrobe (I’m looking in the mirror here!), what a nice pop of colour!

I was so lucky to have such a beautiful and sunny day today to capture the essence of these colours…

And I love them. I was so happy with the quality of these polishes, and their amazing high-shine finish, without a top coat! I wore Espresso for nearly a week with nary a chip. I am definitely going to be looking out for nubar’s next collection!

Oh and because I was so obsessed with Velvet Silver, I had to play with it. Look how perfectly it dresses up:

That is a subtle gradient of Shimmer Polish Jennifer, previously reviewed here. Isn’t it dreamy??
