Well… Ok, so “date” may be a bit of an overstatement.

But we did have a coffee with Ricky Wilson, Dior’s International Celebrity Makeup Artist in an intimate setting at the Holt’s Cafe in Toronto. Sara of 29Secrets and I were the lucky bloggers at this event, also attended by DR’s lovely PR Executive Darline.

Dior_RickyWilson

Ricky was in town to attend the Magic of Dior Event at Toronto Holt Renfrew counters, and squeezed in a little bit of time to meet with us and share some of his tricks and ideas… and a few celebrity stories!

An easy-to-talk-to man with a creative gift for makeup and all things beauty, Ricky happily held court over his small audience, and shared with us his predictions for spring and summer 2014.

A Dior devotee, this was his 10th year with the brand! He was happy to share that in the past five years, he has felt that Dior’s head office in France has started to pay closer attention to the North American market, garnering inspiration from us and launching exclusives just for our markets. And who doesn’t love market-exclusive products?

Some secrets from the man

His go-to products from Dior?

He raved about Dior’s new Glow Maximizer and Pore Minimizer, which we had not seen at the time but have since launched as part of Dior’s Spring 2014 Trianon collection. He recently used them on celebrity Aisha Tyler, and raved about the lack of touch-ups needed during breaks of her talk show, The Talk. He loves to use Glow Maximizer all over to provide that healthy glow and boost radiance, while Pore Minimizer diffuses your skin, giving it a “velvety” yet matte finish, without looking dry. While many of us, me included, rush to blot and apply powder to make our faces matte, he finds these new products allow us to use less product and have a glow instead. (Rushing off to wipe that powder off my nose…)

He is also obsessed with Dior’s famed Lipglow, which he uses often on his clients.

Learn to love your imperfections:

While working on Rag and Bone one year, he covered up a model’s dark circles… only to be asked, “where are her dark circles??” Ricky was stunned to discover that this model was hired for her look, including those pesky dark circles… and nervously proceeded to remove her concealer. This experience taught him how beautiful imperfections can be, and today he finds that dark circles lend an air of sophistication.

Biggest trends for this year?

No surprise here, but lots of soft shades, pastels, in floral tones… something that we haven’t necessarily seen in a few years. Deconstructed eyes with washes of pastel colour rather than hard edges, with a pop on the lip in a softly bright pink. He feels nails are following in a matching sense, with soft pastels or pops of bright pink. Where you may have used bronzer, go lightly with a sheer pastel blush. Finally, he finds that we are headed back to more shine: lipgloss is back in a big way! (If you were paying attention, all these gorgeous colours and trends were found in Dior’s Trianon collection for spring!)

Dior_Spring2014_DiorVernis

An artist tip:

One of my pet peeves has always been applying mascara on others. Ricky offered to share his artist secret with me: gently place your thumb on the eyelid of the eye that you’re applying mascara to, protecting the eyelid while simultaneously positioning the thumb just behind the upper lashes. As the mascara wand is placed at the base of upper lashes and lightly wiggled through and up, your thumb will protect the eyelid from excess mascara, yet allow you to thoroughly coat your client’s lashes. He showed me this tip, then even allowed me an opportunity to practice on him!

Dior_RickyWilson3

It was an honour to hear artist secrets, trends, beauty tips and tricks, as well as some celebrity stories from such a famed artist! Ricky was easy to chat with, completely down-to-earth, and best of all, a total pro! As a parting gift, we received a beauty touch up, and to be honest, I wish I could have stayed in Ricky’s chair for the entire afternoon! Would it really have been too much to ask for an entire glam makeover? 😉

Keep your eyes peeled for any future Dior Celebrity Makeup Artist events because you will not be disappointed!

This season, AERIN introduces the new ESSENTIALS COLLECTION – an updated selection of carefully edited AERIN products women simply can’t live without. The perfect blend of fresh, new favourites and easy, must-have classics create a perfectly tailored daily beauty routine that easily fits into a stylish lifestyle. From AERIN’s new multi-tasking Rose Balm, to an updated Brush Collection for effortless application, to your favourite Rose Hand & Body Cream, it’s a versatile assortment that blends sheer colour and subtle radiance with inherent ease.

As part of its new ESSENTIALS Collection, AERIN introduces the new AERIN Kaleidolight Palette. Encased in a pretty pale pink soft drawstring pouch is a beautiful square golden compact with a foil-finish on the top, and a large mirror inside.

Aerin_Kaleidolight_pouch2

Aerin_Kaleidolight_gold2

Easy and versatile, this pretty palette of five skin-loving, light-enhancing shades of bronze, beige, pink and lavender add a subtle glow in one sweep. Swirl the Aerin Kabuki Brush across the palette to highlight the face, or use The Brush Essentials to add light and colour to eyes and cheeks with select colours.

Aerin_Kaleidolight_palette2

Appearing very muted and soft, the five shades (the soft beige shade appears twice in the compact) are actually quite pigmented. So a word of advice, start with a very light hand and build if you wish.

Here are the colours, starting with the upper-left lilac, going clockwise in the compact and swatched left to right. The larger swatch on the right of my photo shows all the shades blended together:

Aerin_Kaleidolight_swatch

You can see the effect of all the shades blended is a subtle glow with a touch of warm bronze. Though the shades provide a delicate glow, there is no visible shimmer, and the powder is ultra-fine and applies easily, without streaking.

The Kaleidolight Palette is a fantastic multi-use palette, with colours that you can use as eye shadow, as blush, to contour (with the darkest beige), as a bronzer, or, sweep a kabuki brush over all the shades and apply it for an all-over glow. Talk about multi-tasking! (Makes a great travel companion!)

With shades suiting a variety of skin tones, I dare say this is a must-have… Like many luxury beauty products, it is a little higher-priced at $78 (Cdn), but worth the investment with its gorgeous, highly pigmented colours.

The NEW AERIN ESSENTIALS COLLECTION is now available at Holt Renfrew Toronto Bloor Street, Yorkdale, Calgary and Vancouver and online at EsteeLauder.ca. For more information head to AERIN on Twitter, Pinterest, and Facebook.

A Valentine’s Day-and-beyond pick for the eternal romantic!

Continuing the success of crafting understated and beautifully feminine fragrances, philosophy, the well-being beauty brand, is proud to unveil a new addition to its spirited collection. Introducing loveswept, a sparkling fragrance that uplifts the senses and inspires the emotion that love is where it all begins—love for life—and love for yourself.

LoveSwept-Angled_Beauty_wb

the story: loveswept unfolds as a sensorial love story… opening with a feeling of effervescence from bergamot and blue violet flower, then blooms with the enchantment of a spring bouquet of jasmine, lotus blossom and purple passion fruit, finally, warm musk, creamy amber and white cedarwood linger, creating an unforgettable trail of love ever-after.

Through loveswept, philosophy encourages women to follow their hearts every day, in all that they do. its vibrant and romantic scent captures the memorable moments that go along with finding a true love—be it another person, an undiscovered place or a newfound passion. loveswept is a beautiful reminder that love is what compels us to live fully.

my review: A very spring-like, fresh fragrance, loveswept made me think of a meadow at dawn… it has a very green scent – green as in fresh, grassy, spring bouquet. I definitely smelled the floral bloom and bergamot, which, by the way, I adore! Just its opening note of bergamot captured my heart, but the fragrance is more complex than that, lingering with its fruity notes and finishing up with a sweet warmth. Definitely a romantic fragrance, definitely something to try on your skin for spring.

The loveswept fragrance collection includes forms for layering to your heart’s content

  • loveswept edt spray, 60ml, $55.00
  • loveswept body lotion, 480ml, $44.00
  • loveswept shower gel, 480ml, $31.00
  • loveswept rollerball, 10ml, $23.00
  • loveswept edt spray, 15ml, $20.00

The loveswept collection is now available at Sephora, and will be available at Hudson’s Bay and Shoppers Drug Mart beginning in April 2014.

Prepare to be swathed in delicate luxury…

February 12, 1947. A new couturier became an international triumph with his very first show. Christian Dior’s silhouettes are an ode to femininity, with slender waists and skirts that bloom like corollas. He wanted this new regal allure to bring a smile back to women’s faces after the gloomy years of the war. To give them unparalleled weapons of seduction. At the same time, this optimistic fun-lover had a stroke of genius: to create a perfume in the image of his dresses. An elegant chypre composition with a bold yet sophisticated sillage.

And so, in 1947, Miss Dior was born, an ebullient, cajoling fragrance in which Jasmine from Provence mixes with sensual mosses and a surprising green note of Galbanum. Sprayed generously around the rooms, the first Dior perfume instantly charmed the audience at the New Look show. And hooked countless women, who flocked to 30 Avenue Montaigne to offer themselves this youthful, elegant Miss Dior.

Miss Dior, the original dream
“After women, flowers are the most divine creations.” ~Christian Dior

Spring is in bloom at 30 Avenue Montaigne.missdior

Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet is a subtle floral composition that celebrates the beauty of flower buds and the velvet softness of petals.
It is a delicate evocation of Christian Dior’s legendary love of flowers.
Its subtle shades of femininity follow the new clean lines and floral colour codes in the silhouettes composed by Raf Simons for Dior Haute Couture.

It is a soft and gentle fragrance with a bucolic caress. The perfume of a new era, an ode to flowers for today’s Dior woman that also tells the story of an iconic dress, a blooming dress-bouquet that was made to adorn Christian Dior’s feminine ideals.

Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet, the floral caress

At Dior, flowers reign surpreme.
Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet upholds this credo. Its elegant composition is an invitation to a delicate springtime bouquet that reveals the softly swathed sensuality of tender notes.

Subtle, delicate and floral, Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet is a singular signature that radiates around a Peony accord. A harmonious composition that softly exalts Sicilian Mandarin Essence and Rose Essence on a velvety cushion White Musk base.

Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet is a silky, sculpted perfume. Not a frontal invitation, but a halo, like an aura. It is a ‘cocoon’ fragrance that possesses the extreme elegance of softness.” François Demachy, Dior Perfumer-Creator

Tender Peony

Sensually charming but unostentatious, Peony is at the heart of the melody in Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet. Or rather, a Peony accord, for everyone knows that this fragile flower cannot be coaxed and is so delicate to handle it has not yet been able to deliver its natural essence.

Its unique sillage can only be obtained by creating an Accord where Rose and fruity notes of Apricot and Peach compose a stirring evocation of this flower’s sublime scent. An elusive Peony that seems to have been recreated in a trompe-l’œil effect, just like the Miss Dior dress that bloomed in the Trompe-L’Œil collection in 1949.
A floral signature that seals the discreet sensuality and tender charm of Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet.

Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet speaks in subtle undertones. It is a perfume that plays on the charm of seduction. The perfume of a woman full of grace.” François Demachy

MissDiorBB2014

Miss Dior, the Couture bottle

The most Couture fragrance of all had to be elegantly dressed.

At first Miss Dior was housed in an amphora whose harmonious curves were moulded along the En Huit lines of the New Look. Then the famous bottle “tailored like a suit” made its mark in the early 1950s, matching the new verticality that inspired the couturier after the round shapes of the New Look. Its strict form was crafted like a fabric draped to hang just right. Houndstooth was added, like a flattering motif, engraved in its glass sides.
For the final touch, a Couture bow knotted at its neck recalls how the couturier loved to highlight a décolleté or the small of the back. Like a springtime bouquet, the rosy jus is coloured a tender shade.
All these emblematic details underscore the importance of the Dior touch.

Legendary codes that express eternal elegance.

MissDiorBB_perfume

A soft floral fragrance with just enough sweetness to be feminine, Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet is elegant without being overpowering. It truly is a “cocoon fragrance” that evokes sensuality and seduction. It is the perfect spring scent; intoxicating in the softest sense, almost like a whisper that leaves you (and him) longing for more. I am in love.

Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet 50 ml retails for $82 Cdn and 100 ml for $107 Cdn, and will be available exclusively at The Bay Dior counters and TheBay.com February 2014. Available at all other Dior counters May 1, 2014.  For more information (no shipping to Canada), head to Dior.com!

All Dior Trianon makeup will be available mid-January.

In addition to the limited edition makeup, Dior releases four new additions to their Extreme Backstage professional line-up. The new Pore Minimizer is a perfecting, matifying base that diminishes pores and creates a matte effect upon application, refining skin texture and smoothing fine lines. Its filler spheres combined with soft-focus pigments even out the complexion and erase imperfections invisibly and weightlessly, leading to perfect-looking skin even in close-up.

Tips: Apply all over to hydrated skin, starting at centre of face and blending outwards and upwards with fingertips. Pore Minimizer can be used alone or under foundation for optimal application and hold.
Touch up during the day to matify and diminish pores by patting gently onto required areas then blending with fingertips.

Glow Maximizer radiance booster provides skin an infusion of light without shine or iridescence. Inspired by studio reflectors, its imperceptible texture contains microscopic mirrors to instantly illuminate the face, sculpting features and correcting colour imperfections. Dark shadows fade, and the complexion looks as radiant as under studio lighting.

Tips: As a booster: mix a pea-sized quantity with foundation and apply a light layer to well-hydrated skin, blending outwards and upwards.
To sculpt the face: pat gently over makeup onto the desired light-catching areas such as the forehead, bridge of nose, brow bone and cheekbones.

Both Dior Pore Minimizer and Glow Maximizer will be available at Sephora January 17th, everywhere on January 30th, 2014. $42 Cdn each.

Its secret is a weightless volatile oil that once applied, evaporates to fix the makeup. Using pigments from foundation technologies, the eye primer unifies and corrects the lid complexion for a perfect eye makeup base. Throughout the day, the primer prevents eyeshadow from creasing, keeping colour even and true all day long. Dior Backstage Eye Prime will be available at Sephora January 17th, everywhere on January 30th, 2014. $30 Cdn each.

This was the first of the new products I had to test, and I must say, I am impressed. Eye Prime applies like a concealer-type cream, immediately drying to a powder-like finish. I have tried wearing it as a base to powder eye shadow as well as smudged kohl-type liner/shadows, and true to its promise, no creasing and no wearing off of my eye makeup. There are very few eye primers that have held up to my standards – in fact, I have relied on only one product thus far – but Dior’s eye primer is truly ‘backstage’ material.

Finally, Dior introduces a new variation of its iconic Lip Glow: a coral edition! An exclusive for the Trianon collection, the universal lip balm imprints a flash of sunlight on your lips, heightening their natural colour. $35 Cdn, available mid-January.
