It seemed appropriate to welcome fall this year with this review of Dior’s latest collection for Fall 2017, Metallics. Presenting a story of contrasts, the attraction of opposites, the alchemy of contradictory effects…
Peter Philips, Creative and Image Director for Dior Makeup, explores the possibilities of a season with opulent colours and rich textures, producing a clash of vibrant metallics and muted mattes. This autumnal palette electrified by the glint of metal forms a beauty manifesto for women who are strong yet fragile, sensual yet subversive, almost insolent, but always sophisticated. A chic and multifaceted personality, who dares to wear colour and knows how to play with effects to forge a personal, confident look.
New this season is the latest hybrid product from the House of Dior, Metalizer Eyes & Lips. This little tube with a nozzle houses metal-effect pigments in an ultra-creamy, quick-drying texture that can be used both on your lids and your lips. It can be applied with the finger to leave a light veil of colour with chrome effect (read: shiny, reflective metal look!) on the eyelids, or applied with a brush to intensify this for a bolder finish. It can also be applied all over the lips as a lip colour, or softly over lipstick to play with contrasts. Available in five screaming metal shades; shown are 528, 548, and 678:
Although not brand-new in its category, I loved the Dior Metalizer simply for its effect and gorgeous shade selection. I adore gleaming metal lids, going back to my love affair with Dior Fusion Mono in 2013, and now love the ability to add this effect to your lips and complexion as well. And just look at that shimmer in 678 Bronze Tension!
Dior’s iconic 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow palette boasts new formulas that glide beautifully on the skin, launched this fall in two smoky harmonies each containing matte, satin, glitter and shiny effects:
- 007 Hypnotize features warm brown, gold and chocolate tones around an exuberant brick shade
- 677 Magnetize starts from an almost frosted grey to explore a cooler scheme ranging from platinum and silver to fiery charcoal.
Below you can see swatches of each palette, and each is absolutely gorgeous! I love that there is both a warm smoky palette in Hypnotize, and a cooler, more neutral-hued, true smoky palette in Magnetize. The shades are gorgeous, and apply like butter. I love that there are both matte and shiny options in each palette, as well as a bronze/golden hue. The one negative I found was the golden shade in Hypnotize: while it looks vibrant and deep in the palette, the shadow did lack some intensity upon application (second from left in the first swatch photo below). The remaining shades were perfect, deep, and beautiful. These are both stunning eyeshadow palettes in a fairly small size – definite must-haves if you don’t own a smoky palette like these!
To add a finishing touch to the eyes, Diorshow Bold Brow Mascara is enriched with microfibers to achieve a lush, full brow shape. Available in three ash tones for a natural effect: 011 Light, 021 Medium and 002 Dark.
Dior also enriched its line with the addition of three new Diorshow Brow Styler pencils this fall: 021 Chestnut, 003 Auburn and 004 Black.
For its signature smile, Peter Philips designed five new Rouge Dior shades for fall to combine the opulent hues and metallic effects on the eyes, face and nail.
- Sensual Matte, a pretty, irreverent beige
- Hypnotic Matte, a fervent ultra-feminine rosewood
- Eccentric, a rosy brown with strong sex appeal
- Enigmatic, a mysterious wine-red
- and finally, the iconic 999 with a metallic effect called simply, 999 Metallic.
Paired with matching shades of Rouge Dior, the Dior Contour pencil completes the look in 169 Grège, 223 Beige Lumière, 593 Brown Fig, 948 Enigmatic Matte, 758 Sophisticated Matte.
I am absolutely obsessed with matte lipsticks, no matter the season, and I knew when I saw these that I would wear them immediately! The two nude Rouge Diors I received are absolute perfection – see swatches both above and below. Enigmatic, though not a matte, is a total fall colour, absolutely gorgeous, and I was lucky enough to test it out with the matching Lipliner Pencil (see below). Out of the three I tested, Enigmatic was the most moisturizing with a hint of shine (as expected), while both Mattes were still beautiful, not at all drying, and applied like a dream! See all my swatches below – what is your favourite colour?
